The landscape of traditional relationships is evolving, embracing everything from self-marriage rituals to companionship with robots. This shift reflects a growing acceptance of diverse expressions of love and devotion, as evidenced by unorthodox unions. A notable example is Akihiko Kondo, a Japanese man who married the fictional Vocaloid Hatsune Miku in 2018 and eagerly awaits their sixth anniversary.
Kondo, 41, recently shared a cake receipt on his Instagram to celebrate their upcoming anniversary on November 4. The cake was inscribed with the heartfelt message, “I like Miku very much. Happy six-year anniversary.”
In an interview with The Mainichi Shimbun, Kondo revealed that before his affection for Miku, he had pursued romantic interests with women during his school years. After confessing his feelings seven times and facing rejection each time, he endured bullying for being an otaku, a term used for avid fans of anime and manga. In 2007, Kondo discovered his love for Miku, coinciding with the character’s release. Following workplace bullying, he was diagnosed with adjustment disorder and took an extended sick leave.
Hatsune Miku, whose name translates to “the first sound of the future,” is a Vocaloid singing voice synthesizer software. Fans recognize her as a 16-year-old pop star characterized by her long, turquoise twin tails. Kondo’s enduring commitment to this virtual idol symbolizes a unique aspect of modern relationships, challenging conventional notions of love and companionship.
