Meghan and Harry pay a personal visit to the family of the Uvalde teacher
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry made a surprise visit on Saturday to the home of Irma Garcia’s family in Uvalde, Texas. Garcia was one of two teachers killed while trying to shield students during a deadly school shooting at Robb Elementary School on May 24.
The couple attended a small birthday gathering for Irma’s sister, Claudia Martinez. In a video posted online, Meghan sings Happy Birthday with other family members present. She had carried a cake for the occasion.
In an emotional post, Martinez thanked Meghan and Harry for taking time from their schedules to offer support. “Seeing them meant a lot for Irma and Joe’s kids. We are grateful for the love from their well-wishers,” he said.
Defending the couple amid online trolls, Martinez added he was not paid for the video. “This was my personal experience with the Duchess. She’s nothing like how some want her to be portrayed,” he mentioned.
The 19 student and two teacher casualties in the Uvalde school tragedy shocked the world. The shooter, an 18-year-old man, was eventually shot dead. Meghan and Harry’s thoughtful gesture to one affected family has won them praise.
