The abuse of benefits, including taking home dinners when the employees are not even working from the office, resulted in an official HR investigation and the dispatch of people.
Meta Platforms, Inc. is an American multinational technology company that owns and operates Facebook.
Instagram, Threads, and WhatsApp and fired 24 employees at Los Angeles offices after they allegedly spent their $25 meal credits on things like toothpaste, laundry detergent, and wine glasses, The Guardian reported.
According to the news site, the company, with over 70,000 employees, was dismissed last week following an investigation that established they were misappropriating the system of giving its employees meal credits.
One employee who wished to remain anonymous and said that he was earning $400,000 (308,070 pounds) testified that meal credits meant for providing people with dinners had been spent on household essentials and groceries like toothpaste and tea.
“On days where I wouldn’t be eating at the office, like if my husband was cooking or if I was grabbing dinner with friends, I figured I ought not to waste the dinner credit,” the employee wrote on Blind, an anonymous messaging platform.
According to the Financial Times, which first reported the story, he admitted the breach when approached as part of a human resources investigation into the practice and was later fired. “It was almost surreal that this was happening,” the person wrote.
