Mexico imposes retaliatory tariffs on the US

Sheinbaum criticised the Trump government for proceeding with the drastic tariff measures that will target Mexico’s economy. Denouncing the tariffs as “offensive and defamatory”, the Mexican president laid out the triumphs of her young government in opposition to Mexico’s mighty narcotics cartels.

Mexico on Tuesday issued retaliatory tariffs in counter-reaction to US President Donald Trump’s 25 per cent tariff on Mexican imports. The nation’s President Claudia Sheinbaum revealed that she will unveil the US products Mexico plans to target with tariffs on Sunday during a public ceremony in central Mexico City. Unlike China and Canada, Mexico waited until Sunday, although since January the country has claimed that it had been prepared with a plan for this very eventuality.

Sheinbaum affirmed on Tuesday that there is no justification for punishing some of America’s biggest US trading partners. There is no motive or reason, nor justification that this decision will follow which will influence our people and our nations,” she continued. Ottawa, meantime, has promised to impose $100 billion in tariffs on American exports within 21 days.

The tariffs imposed by Trump which he announced in January took effect on March 4, opening up retaliatory actions to countries that have been left on their own by it. From just after midnight, Canada and Mexico imports are now to be taxed at 25 per cent, with Canadian energy products subject to 10 per cent import duties.

Sheinbaum condemned the Trump administration for proceeding with the broad tariff actions that will strike Mexico’s economy. The Mexican president, referring to the tariffs as “offensive and defamatory”, enumerated the successes of her new government against Mexico’s mighty drug cartels, such as confiscating over a ton of fentanyl and shutting down 329 methamphetamine laboratories.

We work together to prevent illegal drug trafficking to the United States, but as we have reiterated on several occasions, the government of that nation also has a responsibility for the crisis of opioid use that has produced so many victims in the United States,” Sheinbaum stated.

Mexico’s president went on to say that the tariffs Mexico would retaliate with are “in no way or with the intent of initiating an economic or commercial confrontation that, unfortunately, and regretfully, is the contrary of what we ought to be doing.”
