Microsoft outage disrupts airports across India

The recent huge Microsoft outage affected airports across the country, and this caused some problems, particularly for the passengers at Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi’s leading airport. Although the circumstances in IGI’s Terminal 3 were somewhat better, some concerns were still observed, such as boarding pass generation issues for international passengers.

Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport had a comparatively better experience; however, he noted long queues. Two flights were off, and many international ones were delayed, though, unlike the previous day, many of them were not fully cancelled.

The blackout worldwide due to a CrowdStrike software upgrade impacted many industries, such as airlines. In India, it caused disruptions in the airline check-in system to collapse, immediately delaying and sometimes cancelling flights. IndiGo’s counterparty alone reported over 200 flights cancelled, and hundreds of flights were delayed because of manual check-in.

The extent of this effect or change was evidenced in areas such as high-density airports, where passengers faced long lines, and ticketing was still done manually. Airlines agreed to the problems and started using handwritten boarding passes.

This has affected the Indian financial sector slightly, but most of the problems have been cleared. The government stated that the situation was being rectified through manual interventions, and it received assurance from the ministry that all problems should be solved by midday the next day.

CrowdStrike also affirmed the situation stemmed from a flaw in a content update for Windows hosts and was not a security attack.
