Amer Ghalib, who oversees a city in battleground state Michigan, says the Republican is the ‘right choice’ despite disagreements.
The mayor of the only city in the United States with an all-Muslim government has endorsed former President Donald Trump for November’s presidential election.
Still, a leader like Amer Ghalib, head of the city of Hamtramck in this decisive battleground state, said on Sunday:
President Trump and I may not agree on everything, but I know he is a man of principles.”.
“Though it’s looking good, he may or may not win the election and be the 47th president of the United States, but I believe he is the right choice for this critical time.
I’ll not regret my decision no matter the outcome, and I’m ready to face the consequences.”
Just a little less than a week after meeting the Republican candidate before a town hall in the Michigan city of Flint, Hamtramck—with an approximate population of 28,000 people—made headlines for being the first US city to have elected an all-Muslim City Council and a Muslim mayor, not this year but last year, in 2021.
A Yemeni immigrant who came to the US when he was 17, Ghalib supported Trump.
Ghalib last week told The Detroit News that the two had discussed the concerns of Arab and Muslim Americans and that Trump had requested his endorsement.
Michigan is among seven key swing states expected to hold the outcome of November’s contest between Trump and his Democratic Party rival, Vice President Kamala Harris.
