Encouragingly, in the statement released on Thursday, the group took the Harris-Walz campaign to task for denying the right to speak on the main stage to a Palestinian person.
Slightly one day before the official acceptance by Kamala Harris of the Democratic Presidential nomination, the Muslim Women for Harris protested in a statement in which they declared they were withdrawing support from the Harris-Walz campaign. It was issued on the third day of the Democratic National Convention.
Again, in the statement that the group issued on Thursday, it criticized the Harris-Walz campaign for not allowing a Palestinian person to address the gathering on the main stage.
The statement was released soon after the Uncommitted National Movement, a group that was accorded 30 delegates to the convention, protested by sitting in a sit-in exercise at the convention entrance.
Thus, the “Muslim Women for Harris” stated on Friday that, informed by the new information from the Uncommitted movement that VP Harris’ team rejected their demand for a Palestinian American to speak on the DNC stage, we cannot in good conscience proceed with ‘Muslim Women for Harris-Walz’.
On the third day of the convention, 30 delegates staged a sit-down protest outside the convention hall. Dem Congresswoman Ilhan Omar participated in the protest virtually. Not even Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who was among the group of Democratic party figures who spoke at the convention, was physically present for the sit-in; she had to participate via FaceTime.
Some of the uncommitted delegates had this to say: “Uncommitted delegates call upon the Democratic Party to prevent the creation of a hierarchy of human value by enabling Palestinian voices on the main stage. We are learning that the hostage families of Israelis will be speaking from the main stage.
We fully support that decision, and consequently we, with bated breath, look forward to the day we will get to hear from Palestinians who have suffered the largest number of civilian casualties.
