Speaking more like an eagle, the head of NATO has said that if China fails to stop supporting the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the latter should be made to take full responsibility.
During his tour in Washington, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg was so angered by China that he bluntly said that China is ‘attempting to have its cake and eat it’ by supporting Russia’s aggression while also attempting to remain an ally to Europe.
“This cannot work in the long run,” Stoltenberg said that the nature and the support provided by China in the form of technology and other resources to Russia cannot be allowed.
NATO chief said about the sanctions lifting that geopolitics may not solely rely on commerce and added that
“At some stage, we should consider some economic cost if China doesn’t change their behavior.”
Stoltenberg speaks that sense at a time when Russia does not seem to let up from its vicious attack on Ukraine. Moscow called the summit a “waste of time” and would only be willing to negotiate as the price for Ukraine’s capitulation.
The NATO chief also discussed nuclear weapons and defense spending, the need to further strengthen protection methods in contrast to Russia’s aggressive stance.
In emphasizing a sharp tilt against China, Stoltenberg offered a stark preview of the deepening split between the West and the increasingly assertive authoritarian powers contesting the postwar world order. As the conflict in Ukraine continues, NATO and the international community are left wondering what it has gotten into and seeing how power relations work at the global level.
