New Chinese base near Pangong lake raises concerns for India

Satellite images of the new Chinese base on the northern bank of Pangong Lake have been studied by senior Indian military officers, who say that it is unlike any other location on the Chinese side of the Line of Actual Control. It lies 36 kilometers east of the LAC and about 15 km from a newly built bridge across the lake, showing a substantial rise in Beijing’s presence in areas that were not previously occupied.

More than 70 permanent structures are at the site, dispersed in a way that limits the damage a missile strike could cause. According to military sources, the facility is meant for soldiers and porters working on construction activities and storing logistics, which can be deployed along the LAC. Each structure can hold up to 6-8 soldiers or up to 10 tonnes of supplies, including ammunition.

According to geospatial expert Damien Symon, heavy machinery and supply depots are at the site, which is indicative of large-scale development. “The site itself is developing several double-story buildings and administrative offices while also undertaking electrification and possibly a water-pumping station,” he said. Retired Lt. General DS Hooda said the dual-use nature of the site is a feature. While China can claim that these are civilian infrastructures, they also have military uses.

Recent reports have pointed out that fortified positions and air defense sites were being built not far from the bridge, which could provide cover for the new base.

However, the Ministry of External Affairs has refused to comment on these developments. India has, however, gone about consolidating its infrastructure along the China frontier in a big way. The ₹4,800 crores Vibrant Villages program is part of this effort to ensure better border village development and provide a formidable Indian presence as a deterrent against encroachments.
