No lawyer will defend Hindu monk in Bangladesh; faces jail time

No lawyer in Chattogram came to fight for the bail hearing of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, who was jailed for over a week. Threatened by Islamists in Bangladesh, Das’s former lawyer is battling for his life in the ICU after a brutal attack, and the monk will have to be in jail for a month now.

Threatened by Islamists in Bangladesh, no lawyer came forward to defend a Hindu monk who had been fighting for minority rights and was arrested on charges of sedition. Monk Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari will have to spend a month in jail even as his previous lawyer is battling for life in the intensive care unit (ICU) of a hospital after an attack at his home.

Iskcon India said on Monday that Islamists attacked advocate Ramen Roy, who was representing Chinmoy Krishna Das and ransacked his house. It said that Roy was fighting for his life in the hospital ICU.

The attack and threats by Islamists are part of the bid to silence the voice of minority Hindus in Muslim-majority Bangladesh. After the attack on Roy and threats to lawyers, Das went legally unrepresented in a Chattogram Court on Tuesday.

With the example of Roy’s attack, no lawyer dared to provide legal assistance to the Hindu monk in securing bail. Das’s next hearing has been posted for January 2. Therefore, Das will be in jail for a month.

According to India Today TV, sources from Das’s legal team report that the Muslim advocates within the Chittagong Bar Association have constantly intimidated and threatened the Hindu counterparts who had previously represented Das.
