Obamas rally Democrats with strong endorsements of Kamala Harris at the DNC

Obamas give resounding backing to Kamala Harris at the DNC.

At the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, former US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris in her presidential bid.

The Democratic Party’s top leaders expressed hope that Harris’ campaign would usher in “change” and unite Americans. However, they cautioned that the race remains tightly contested in key swing states.

In back-to-back speeches, the Obamas praised Harris’ vision while criticizing President Donald Trump‘s administration. Barack Obama said the country is ready for “new leadership” from Harris.

Michelle Obama acknowledged still feeling the impact of her mother’s recent passing. But she was compelled to endorse Harris and encourage voting to override any suppression efforts.

Both emphasized turning out large numbers of Democratic voters will be vital to securing victory. Michelle Obama asserted that when faced with attacks, “we go high.”

The endorsements highlighted ongoing party anxiety given Harris’ narrow national polling lead. Some analysts view the race as effectively tied in battleground territories that will decide the election outcome.

While Harris sees herself as the underdog, the Obamas’ remarks invoked hope from Barack Obama’s initial historic campaign. Their validation of Harris continuing that legacy energized the virtual convention.

Meanwhile, campaigning in Wisconsin, Vice President JD Vance criticized Harris’ record on issues like crime and the economy. He insisted new Republican leadership is needed for public safety and prosperity.

The dueling messaging from both tickets indicated an uphill battle for control of the White House will intensify in the remaining election weeks.
