“The Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi has issued over 3000 visas to Sikh pilgrims from India to participate in the Birthday Celebrations of Baba Guru Nanak Dev Ji to be held in Pakistan from 14-23 November 2024.”

Pakistan Charge d’Affaires Saad Ahmad Warraich wished the pilgrims a fruitful yatra in his warm wishes. With heartfelt congratulations, he underlined the importance of this yatra. Indian pilgrims will be visiting Dera Sahib, Panja Sahib, and Gurdwara Janam Asthan in Nankana Sahib, and Kartarpur Sahib is the resting place of Guru Nanak.

The holy festival is called Gurpurab, or Guru Nanak Jayanti. It is celebrated as the birthday of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of the Sikh religion and the first guru. On this very special day, people gather to commemorate the holy man by participating in spiritual programs and chanting lines from the scripture, namely the Guru Granth Sahib of Sikhism.

This holy event falls during the full moon of Kartik month, also popularly known as Kartik Purnima. It is celebrated as Parkash Utsav. Guru Nanak was born in 1469 in Rai Bhoi di Talwandi, now known as Nankana Sahib, near Lahore. Guru Nanak dedicated himself to spreading the message of peace, equality, and tolerance.

Throughout the day, prayers are held continuously, with a climax during night-long celebrations. During these, the devotees are seated together to savor langar, a community meal. The same sacred meal is accompanied by kada prasad, a traditional prasad. Most participants also engage in Sewa, where service through food and donation to others is rendered on this great day.
