Pakistan President terms May 9, 2023, as a “dark day.”
As the first anniversary of the tragic May 9 incident approaches, Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has termed the day as “dark” in the country’s history. Taking to Twitter, Zardari said a politically instigated mob ran amok last year, damaging public and military properties across Pakistan, only benefitting the nation’s enemies.
He recalled how, on May 9, 2023, the dramatic footage of former PM Imran Khan being dragged out of a court stirred violent protests among his supporters.
Khan, ousted in a no-confidence vote in 2022, was arrested in an accountability bureau case related to an alleged loss caused to the national exchequer during his tenure.
Zardari maintained that such lawlessness has no place in democratic systems and called on all stakeholders to strengthen the rule of law and tolerance.
The president’s remarks come when political tensions remain high in Pakistan. Khan continues attacking the incumbent government and accusing them of conspiring against him.
As the country marks one year of the fateful day stirred by Khan’s arrest, Zardari has stressed on political dialogue and direction for citizens. Observers say urgent reforms are needed to tackle such volatility in the future.
