Presently, Paris is set to host the 2024 Summer Olympics; however, the city is facing several security issues that may dwarf the sporting occasion. Before the start of the Opening Ceremony, French police detained several suspects for acts of terror threats against the Olympics.
This is in addition to the arrest of two 18-year-olds and a Russian man who is suspected of having been involved in espionage with the intention of causing hostility.
Sustaining security issues, fast trains in France have been targeted with ‘bad intention’ actions such as Arson, which hampers transportation to the capital city. Israeli officials have even said that the railway sabotage had something in the axis of evil of Iran.
There are further so-called threats to the safety of Israeli athletes. With this, more death threats were received by the Israeli athletes, and they also expected hostility based on the Munich Olympic tragedy of 1972.
Besides the security challenges, strikes have emerged as another issue that the Paris Olympics might have to contend with; workers at a luxury hotel hosting some of the IOC members have gone on strike. In order to protect the visitors, French authorities have mobilized up to 45,000 policemen and up to 10,000 soldiers to ensure the security of the games;
Still, to complement the objective of a successful Olympics and the atmosphere of sharing joy and triumph, security forces will have to act as protectors and guardians without transforming the games into a prison.
