PM Modi arrives in Kazan for BRICS Summit, likely bilateral meets with Putin, others on cards.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday reached Kazan city in Russia to participate in the 16th BRICS Summit.
Before his departure, PM Modi underscored that BRICS has emerged as an important platform for cooperation on global issues of development.
The summit, being hosted by Russia, is expected to showcase the grouping’s influence amid situations in Ukraine and West Asia.
During the two-day visit, Modi will attend summit sessions and also hold bilateral talks with global leaders on the sidelines including Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Meetings with Iran President Masoud Pezeshkian are also slated. Discussions could center on playing a mediatory role between Russia and Ukraine.
Eyes are on a potential interaction between PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping after recent progress in disengaging troops from the Ladakh standoff area.
Neither India nor China has confirmed the talks though China said it will keep updates if any developments occur.
It will be Modi’s second visit to Russia in three months, further cementing the ‘Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership.’
The summit is being closely watched amid escalating global challenges and the expanding BRICS grouping now with 11 prospective members.
