Yesterday, during the two days’ official visit to Russia, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally turned to President Vladimir Putin with an urgent request to stop the war in Ukraine. During an unstructured conversation between the two leaders in Moscow at Putin’s residence, PM Modi insisted that he did not see any possibility of solutions to the conflict using military means and offered Putin a turn to diplomacy.
It was transmitted that during the dinner meeting, PM Modi stressed India’s traditional stance on adherence to the UN Charter and territorial integrity and sovereignty, stating that there is no solution on the battlefield: “Dialogue and diplomacy is the way forward.”
The Prime also expressed worry over the Indian nationals who have been duped by some agents to serve the Russian forces to wage the war against Ukraine. Nic claimed that Russia has agreed to accept the return of all the affected people.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Russia visit is his first one since the Russian armed conflict in Ukraine began nearly a year ago. India has not gone to the United Nations to pass resolutions against Moscow’s conduct while at the same time, it has called for bringing the conflict to an end without violence.
Recently, when he celebrated his electoral success, PM Modi was congratulated by President Putin, who complimented the Indian leader for being specific and effective in promoting his country’s interests. “The figures do not lie, the place that India took – third in the economy,” Putin said.
This was the 16th time the two leaders have met each other in the last ten years; the previous time they met was during the SCO Summit in Samarkand in June 2022. The ‘Order of the Holy Apostle Andrew the First’ is the highest state award of the Russian Federation, and it was only awarded to PM Modi in 2019.
After his Russia visit, PM Modi is visiting historic Austria, which will be his first visit to this country as an Indian prime minister in 40 years.
