Poland scrambles aircraft as Russia strikes Lviv

Poland, which is a member of NATO, has urged its planes in reaction to the bombings of the Russian air force on the Ukrainian city of Lviv, located in the western part of the country and bordering Poland. Polish and allied planes were scrambled during the night on Tuesday as Russia escalated the attack, bringing the total of times Poland has mobilized to three in the last eight days.

Seven people have been reported dead and many others wounded in Lviv due to drone and missile attacks that affected the central part of the city, particularly historical structures. According to the city’s mayor, Andriy Sadovyi, three children died, and more than fifty buildings, including schools and residential houses, were damaged.

Poland’s armed forces said ‘Polish and allied aircraft’ was launched because of the Russian aggression. Streets were also blocked on Wednesday morning in Kyiv and other regions; however, no casualties arose from the strikes.

Yesterday, the Russian Armed Forces fired ‘several hundreds’ of missiles and drones at Ukrainian targets in the last few weeks. Among them, the attack this Tuesday targeting a military institute in Poltava was the deadliest this year; at least 50 people were killed.

Constant tensions resulted in Poland signing $520m in military deals to potentially boost its defense again.
