Pope Francis remains critical but stable amid Pneumonia battle

Pope Francis, battling pneumonia in both lungs, had a good night, the Vatican said in its most recent update on the 88-year-old pope’s health.

The Vatican said on Wednesday that the pope is resting as he nears the 13th day of hospitalization at Rome’s Gemelli hospital, where he was admitted Feb. 14 with breathing troubles. His condition shocked Catholics after a weekend of respiratory assaults that necessitated a high flow of oxygen and blood transfusions.

While the Vatican has assured that the pope’s condition has stabilized, he is yet in critical condition. According to a Tuesday evening medical bulletin, while his clinical condition continues to be critical, it remains stable. The Vatican indicated that there have not been any acute respiratory attacks and vital signs such as heart rate and blood pressure are stable.

A fresh scan was taken for radiological follow-up of the bilateral pneumonia, and the prognosis is still reserved. Despite the severity of his illnesses, Pope Francis has continued to manage Church matters from his hospital suite. Following receiving the Eucharist in the morning, he went back to his work activities, as reported by the Vatican.

As a reaction to his health, pilgrims and believers alike have been praying for the pope’s recovery at the Vatican and the Gemelli hospital. Specialists have cautioned that the recovery may be long, predicting that the pope will continue to be hospitalized for more than this week.
