Putin dismisses ICC war crimes warrant during Mongolia visit

Ulaanbaatar hosts Russian leader despite warrant for alleged crime of deporting Ukrainian children illegally.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has embarked on an official visit to Mongolia without any hindrances since the Ulaanbaatar authorities refused to enforce an arrest warrant for the Russian president.

Mongolia showed its respect to Putin on Tuesday as it presented an honor guard when the man arrived to discuss matters with the country’s president, Ukhnaa Khurelsukh. Mongolia has ignored the international warrant by blanking the calls for it to arrest the Russian leader.

Mongolia is a signatory to the ICC, which sought an arrest warrant for Putin last year for war crimes in Ukraine, including child trafficking.

But they did not get quite a warm welcome; Putin did, though. For his first visit to the neighboring country in five years, the capital’s central Genghis Khan Square was decorated with the enormous Mongolian and Russian flags.

People picketing had come a day before the Russian president was scheduled to come to the country. A handful of demonstrators held signs demanding: This call was followed by the loud chants of “Get War Criminal Putin out of here.”.

Ukraine wishes to have Putin arrested in Mongolia and extradited to the ICC court in The Hague over the alleged unlawful deportation of Ukrainian children—a move that has been incurred since Russian President Vladimir Putin attacked its neighbor in February 2022.
