Putin proposes strengthening ties with Xi amid U.S. transition

In a conference call on Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke to Chinese President Xi Jinping to consolidate their strategic partnership, just hours after Donald Trump took over officially as the 47th President of the United States.

During the call, Putin greeted Xi as a “dear friend” and underlined that “new plans for the development of the Russian-Chinese comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation” were called for. He said he agreed with Xi on the foundation of their cooperation, underlining a shared commitment to common national interests and aligned perspectives on international relations among major powers.

“We build our relations based on the principles of friendship, mutual trust and support, equality, and mutual benefit,” Putin said. He stressed that these contacts are firm and strong, and nothing-whether domestic political processes or current world problems-can affect them.

With Russia’s continued military campaign against NATO-backed Ukrainian forces, and China under pressure from U.S.-led efforts to counter its growing military and economic influence, the two countries have increasingly unified their geopolitical interests.

Putin and Xi, both leaders who have managed the legacies of past humiliations-the 1991 Soviet collapse for Russia and historical colonial subjugation for China-have sought to frame the West as declining and decadent.

The bigger picture sees the United States regard China as its main rival and Russia as a serious threat. Former President Joe Biden has said that the democracies of the world are being challenged by “autocracies” such as China and Russia, further highlighting the complex dynamics at play in global politics.
