Putin to visit Mongolia despite ICC arrest warrant

An invitation at the invitation of the Mongolian counterpart, Putin, is expected to be in Mongolia on September 3, in what will be his first foreign trip since the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant against him in March 2023. The ICC said Putin was involved in the crime of deporting Ukrainian children to Russia and other occupied areas.

The Kremlin later dismissed such a possibility through the reaction of the Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, who said,” No worries.” The visit comes in realizing the invitation that the Mongolian president, Ukhnaa Khurelsukh, has extended. The political relations between the two nations seem good.

Concerning the Rome Statute, ICC member states are supposed to arrest people with warrants of arrest against them. However, the ICC has no enforcement powers. The key functions of the ICC have been outlined above. Ukraine has called on Mongolia to detain Putin, saying that the Russian leader is an international criminal who should be arrested by a warrant.

This arrest warrant is a landmark since it is the first to be issued against a leader from one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council. After the warrant was issued, Putin was not able to travel to the ICC member countries, and due to diplomatic consequences, he missed a summit in South Africa.

Mongolia, a state that ratified the Rome Statute in 2002 and has been very active in promoting international justice, will invite Putin for official meetings with high state officials and various events that will mark the 85th anniversary of the great victory of the Soviet-Mongolian troops over the Japanese militarists at the Khalkhin Gol river.
