Putin’s historic visit to North Korea

The most important new geopolitical event is the scheduled official visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to North Korea, scheduled for Tuesday, October 3.

The visit as a “friendly state visit” to North Korea was made possible after Kim Jong received an invitation to North Korea after rumors had for several months that Putin could visit North Korea on an official visit.

The visit is also expected to accompany this signed memo of understanding and collaboration, which may commence with security realms and press statements.

Experts say the meeting is beneficial for both sides –Russia needs something to bolster its stance during the conflict with Ukraine. At the same time, North Korea could use Russian support to develop its military power.

It could be a grand ceremony that indicates both leaders’ contempt for sanctions and the West. It complements Putin’s overall approach of forming new alliances to resent the continuation of pressure on Russia from the global community.

It may not be fully known precisely what precise agreements have been made, but it is strategic that Putin and Kim Jong-un sat down together. It shows Russia’s endeavors to broaden its relations and keep relevance to other countries while still being under the scandalous accusation of invading Ukraine.

It takes time to see how this historic meeting will unfold further and possibly redefine the region and world relations in the following few months.
