Redditor confused by eight fines for “Slow Driving” in UAE

A Reddit user was left in a confusing situation when he received eight fines for driving from Dubai to Abu Dhabi and back in one day. The man, who posted his story on the site, was fined for “slow driving,” which he said he did not know was a rule. Upset over the late notification of the fines, he said an earlier alert could have saved him from the penalties on his return journey.

The user, known as snazzy_champ, recounted traveling to Abu Dhabi at a speed of 110-115 km/h in the second lane. Upon returning home that night, he was surprised to receive a message detailing the eight fines incurred during both legs of his trip. He noted, “I was not aware of this rule, and there was no flash from the camera. I had no idea about the fine for slightly slow driving, and it wasn’t mentioned on any signs.”

Describing the situation as “totally unfair,” he lamented the lack of prior notification, stating that had he been informed earlier, he would have driven more cautiously on the way back. “I know it’s my mistake, but fining without any notification or news article is totally unfair,” he added.

Reactions in the comments section, however, were largely critical of the user’s claims. Commenters pointed out that signs are clearly marked regarding relevant traffic rules. “Mate, literally as soon as you enter the expressway to Abu Dhabi, there are a bunch of signs clearly stating this,” one user remarked. Another added, “The rule is displayed literally every 3 km.

One of the quite enlightening comments explained that those lanes had a minimum requirement of 120 km/h, adding that their introduction had been well-broadcast on news channels, as well as official social media platforms.

According to previous reports, the Directorate of Traffic and Security Patrols of Abu Dhabi Police has made it clear that the minimum speed on Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Road is applicable to the first two lanes from the left, as part of the necessity of adhering to speed controls to guarantee safety on the roads.
