Reports suggest Trudeau may resign this week

Reports suggest that he will announce his resignation as party leader as early as Monday, Jan 6. According to The Globe and Mail, the embattled Canadian leader has planned to unveil his decision about leaving the party leadership before Wednesday’s key national caucus meeting on Sunday, Jan 5, cites three sources.

According to Reuters, it is unknown whether Trudeau will step down as Canada’s PM immediately or stay until a replacement is chosen. The Trudeau office has yet to issue a statement officially accepting or denying the reports.

However, it is reported that the Canadian prime minister has talked to Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc about whether the latter would be willing to take over as the interim leader and prime minister.

Justin Trudeau took over the Liberal Party leadership in 2013 when the party was in a very bad situation. For the first time, the party had come third in the House of Commons. He swept to power in 2015, helping the Liberals win in 2019 and 2021.
