Republicans gain control of the US House

Enough seats have been won by the Republican Party in the US House to win control and take hold of the American government. According to a report by news agency Associated Press, on Thursday, a House Republican victory in Arizona, along with a win in slow-counting California earlier on Wednesday, gave the GOP the 218 House victories that make up the majority.

Republicans had earlier seized control from Democrats in the Senate. The report said that with hard-fought, thin majorities, Republicans now envision a mandate to upend the federal government and swiftly implement President-elect Donald Trump’s vision for the country.

He had promised it all, from continuing the tax breaks to pursuing the biggest deportation operation in American history and, more importantly, restructuring the economy. The GOP election victories ensured that Congress would support such agendas and that the Democratic Party would be almost powerless to stop them.

The report underlined that when Trump first became president in 2016, Republicans captured Congress, but some party leaders opposed his ideas. However, this is no longer the case today.

When he returns to the White House, Trump will work with a Republican Party fully remade in the image of his “Make America Great Again” movement and a Supreme Court with a conservative majority—including three justices he placed on the bench.

Trump’s House allies are already signalling they will seek revenge for the legal woes that Trump endured in office. This comes as Trump announced, out of the blue, that he would appoint Matt Gaetz, a ferocious loyalist, as attorney general on Wednesday.
