Russia and Ukraine have turned things up seriously in an increasingly intense conflict, trading overnight drone strikes on one another just days after trying to calm each other down through diplomatic channels. A previously unreported call between US President-elect Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on November 7 set off the tensions. During the call, Trump lectured Putin on “Washington’s sizeable military presence in Europe,” according to The Washington Post.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that in one night, Russia launched a record 145 drones to attack Ukraine. “The last night saw a record for the war: 145 Shaheds and other strike drones launched by the Russian side against Ukraine,” Zelensky posted on the platform X, formerly known as Twitter. He underlined again the unrelenting work of Ukraine’s air defense forces, which are non-stop to guarantee the sky was protected from Russian attacks.
During the week, Zelensky reported that Russia has launched over 800 guided aerial bombs, around 600 strike drones, and nearly 20 different missiles. To persuade others to join them in supporting the defense of Ukraine, he commented, “Such terror cannot be stopped with words, and the killing of children and the loss of loved ones cannot just be forgotten.”. He said, “Without justice, there is no lasting peace,” he was confident Ukraine could achieve this.
Russian officials claim to have intercepted 34 Ukrainian drones targeting Moscow on Sunday, which constitutes the largest attempted strike against the Russian capital by Kyiv since the war started in 2022. The increasing drone warfare is a testament to the growing volatility in the region as both sides vie to show off their military muscle even amid peace and stability calls.
