Russia claims control of strategic Niu-York in eastern Ukraine

On Tuesday, Russia’s Ministry of Defence stated that its forces captured Niu-York, a strategic logistics point, from Ukrainian forces in the eastern part of the country, consistent with Moscow’s proclaimed objective to secure the entirety of the Donetsk area.

This has emerged as Ukrainian forces seek to push into Russia’s Kursk province after registering a raid across the border on August 6. The state of affairs in Niu-York also proves the continuation of the Russian attack in the east of Ukraine despite counteractions.

Formerly called Novgorodskoye in Soviet times, Ukraine renamed the city as Niu-York in 2021. The units of the Russian Defence Ministry’s “Centre Grouping” claimed to have eliminated a large number of Ukrainian forces and liberated this critical logistic hub, as the ministry stressed its essential role in the ongoing warfare.

The Ukrainian military has not reported back on requests for an update as to the status of the settlement. With a population of almost 10,000 citizens before the war, Niu-York is situated on the railway that goes to Sloviansk – a city that Moscow has been threatening for a long time.

Heavy infantry combat persists around Toretsk, Niu-York, and the rest of the Toretsk sector. There are accounts that the Russian soldiers have embarked on so-called ‘clearing up operations’ in the region. We have learned from Ukrainian military reports that Russian forces tried to overrun the Niu-York several times.

There are videos to be shared by Russian-supported authorities in which a Russian soldier can be seen installing a Russian flag on an administrative structure located in the settlement; there is also footage of a burnt Ukrainian flag.
