Russia launches suspected anti-satellite weapon, raising US concerns

The global rivalry between powers has not ceased, and a cause for worry has been raised in the renewed space exploration event. The US has claimed that Russia orbited a satellite last week, which can attack other Probes.

The Pentagon’s spokesman, Brig Gen Pat Ryder, said on Tuesday evening Russia had placed a satellite into Low Earth Orbit, which the Pentagon concluded is a counter-space weapon. Ryder said the satellite was in the “same orbit” as another American government satellite. The Pentagon will keep the situation under watch and ensure it is prepared to take the necessary measures anytime when its interests are threatened.

So far, neither has Russia (the Russian authorities have made at least no official statements can be observed). But this incident is occurring when Moscow and Washington have been sparring on the issue of space weapons in the United Nations in recent weeks, with both blaming each other for gearing up space weaponization.

At the beginning of Tuesday, the spokeswoman for the Russian foreign ministry, Maria Zakharova, declared that the US wanted to use space as a battleground. This was countered by the US claiming that Russia is working on a “concerning ”ASAT weapon, although the White House has not confirmed that the weapon has been put to use yet.

Especially alarming is what the Pentagon said about the Russian satellite’s capabilities; Ryder said that it is “presumably capable of attacking other satellites in low Earth orbit. ” So, there was speculation of the warfare in space with satellites wielding control and protecting crucial satellite facilities as the main strategic asset.

With the current shift in the geo-space race around the globe as countries compete to gain superiority and control space, the world will be anxiously waiting to see how this development pans out and whether it degenerated into further escalation or provoked countries to embrace diplomacy toward effective regulation of the extraterrestrial frontier.
