Russia questions West’s support for Kyiv vs. North Korea’s aid

The Russian ambassador to the UN questioned Wednesday the position of Western powers, citing for what reasons partners such as North Korea should not be allowed to prop Moscow in its conflict with Ukraine if the West considers itself entitled to support Kyiv.

But Vassily Nebenzia of Russia came under heavy fire from the US, the UK, South Korea, Ukraine, and others during a Security Council meeting in accusations of violation of UN resolutions and very principles of the UN Charter by involving North Korean troops-the so-called DPRK-in support of Moscow.

The UN Ambassador of South Korea, Joonkook Hwang, declared, “Supporting an act of aggression, which completely violates the principles of the UN Charter, is illegal. Any activities entailed with the DPRK’s dispatch of troops to Russia are clear violations of multiple UN Security Council Resolutions.”

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin revealed that about 10,000 North Korean troops were already deployed to eastern Russia and could be embarking on combat operations in Russia’s Kursk region anytime soon, which borders Ukraine.

Nebenzia justified the collaboration of Russia with North Korea, saying that it does not violate international laws. Though Russia had denied the deployment of North Korean soldiers, this is believed to be associated with the ongoing war in Ukraine since February 2022.

“But even if everything that is being said about the cooperation between Russia and North Korea by our Western colleagues is true, why is it, exactly, that the United States and allies are trying to impose on everyone the flawed logic that they have the right to help the Zelenskiy regime. While Russian allies have no right to do a similar thing?”
