Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Hospital, faces intense scrutiny as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) delves deeper into his role following the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at the institution.
Sources within the CBI revealed to CNN-News18 that Ghosh’s responses have been inconsistent throughout the investigation. The agency aims to piece together the timeline of events and address allegations that authorities may have attempted to cover up the crime by falsely informing the victim’s family that she had died by suicide.
Ghosh, who resigned from RG Kar on August 12 amid claims of corruption within the hospital, now confronts additional legal troubles. On Tuesday, a case was filed against him by the police for cheating, conspiracy, and financial irregularities following a complaint from the special commissioner of health.
The CBI’s ongoing investigation, now in its fifth day, has involved questioning over 30 individuals, including doctors, postgraduate students, and hospital staff. Recent inquiries have focused on whether Ghosh was aware of any pressures faced by the victim and whether any complaints were made to the college authorities.
The agency is also examining Ghosh’s call records and chat details, as well as the circumstances surrounding the renovation of rooms adjacent to the seminar hall where the victim’s body was discovered on August 9.
In a dramatic turn of events, Dr. Sanath Ghosh, initially slated to replace Sandip Ghosh on May 31, 2023, was unable to assume his position due to a locked principal’s office, allegedly locked by Sandip Ghosh himself. This led to the reversal of the transfer order, allowing Sandip Ghosh to remain in his role.
Recently, the West Bengal government announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate financial irregularities at RG Kar under Ghosh’s administration.
The BJP has criticized this move as an attempt to shield Ghosh, with spokesperson Amit Malviya questioning the appropriateness of involving police officers in financial investigations.
