Saurya Airlines crash in Kathmandu kills 18, highlights Nepal’s aviation woes

Saurya Airlines Aircraft SK 309/310 crashed at the Tribhuvan International Airport at midnight on 24th July 2024 during a tragic takeoff, killing many passengers onboard. Flying on the Bombardier CRJ-200 route, the plane heading for Pokhara airport had a ground runoff and exploded on touching the ground.

The sad mishap cost the lives of at least 18 people- the co-pilot and seventeen of the Saurya Airlines staff. The only survivor of the accident was the pilot, Captain Manish Shakya, and he was immediately rushed to a hospital for treatment.

In such a tragic event, people used cameras to capture what really happened, and their footage displayed the aircraft filled with flames and thick smoke. This tragedy quickly attracted emergency responders seeking to perform rescue operations since several people perished in the accident.

The incident has stopped the Kathmandu airport operations for some time, and Saurya Airlines is one of the airlines predominant in five tourist destinations in Nepal.

The air industry in Nepal has long been bedeviled by safety threats resulting from a lack of adequate training and equipment, leading to a series of recent plane crashes. The most recent event in this series would serve as a rude wake-up call that signifies that extra measures are needed to solve the problems facing the aviation industry in terms of safety.
