Schumacher family demands stricter punishment in blackmail case

The blackmailers are trying to extort $15.5 million from Michael Schumacher’s family threatening to unveil photos and videos of the past world champion. Three people have been convicted in a German court for trying to blackmail the family of Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher, but the family is lobbying for a harsher punishment for one of the defendants.

A Wuppertal court convicted a 53-year-old man, Yilmaz T, of trying to blackmail the family of Schumacher out of 15 million euros ($15.5 million) with the threat to post photos and videos of the retired world champion.

He was sentenced to three years in prison. His son, Daniel L, aged 30, was given a six-month suspended sentence, and Markus F, a former security guard at the Schumacher home, was convicted of helping and abetting the conspiracy and given a two-year suspended sentence.

The Schumacher family has since also appealed Markus F’s four-month sentence, claiming it is “far too lenient.” The prosecutors claim that he sold and copied the stolen images for a five-figure amount, and now they are demanding a four-year prison term, the highest possible.

In a Monday statement, Corinna, the wife of Michael Schumacher, was outraged by the breach of trust. “What still amazes me most is the gigantic breach of trust. He must be punished for this so severely that others are discouraged from possibly doing the same,” she stated, calling Markus F “the mastermind behind this affair.”

Schumacher, a seven-time Formula One world champion, has not been seen in public since he suffered a severe brain injury in a skiing accident in December 2013. His family has since kept his condition strictly private, granting access only to those who are closest to him.

This is not the first time that the Schumacher family has resorted to law to safeguard their privacy. They successfully sued German celebrity magazine ‘Die Aktuelle’ in 2024 for publishing an AI-generated “interview” of Schumacher, and they were awarded 200,000 euros ($207,840) in damages.
