Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has found himself in hot water after making a bold statement that could have long-term implications. Renowned for his emotional speeches at public rallies, Sharif said his name would no longer exist if Pakistan does not surpass India in economic and development success.
In a rally attended in Dera Ghazi Khan, Punjab recently, Shehbaz Sharif was visibly more energetic, flailing about with his arms and jumping even on the podium when addressing the public. Reaffirming his government’s intent on improving people’s lives, Sharif told them, “We will work day and night to ensure the situation in Pakistan improves. The Almighty has always blessed Pakistan.”
But in a flash of emotion, he added, “My name will not be Shehbaz Sharif if, due to our efforts, Pakistan does not overtake India in development.” He also pledged allegiance to his elder brother, ex-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, vowing on his life that he would strive to raise Pakistan and overtake India.
Sharif’s tour aimed to reassure citizens of his government’s resolve to tackle serious economic and social issues. He unveiled several large-scale infrastructure projects during his tour, which addressed the critical finance crisis that has long plagued Pakistan following high-level foreign debt.
Following his speech, which was immediately made viral on social media, Sharif was overwhelmed with condemnation. Sharif was blamed for grandiose promises with meager fulfillment by most, with some X users teasing the Prime Minister for what he had stated.
Remarkably, just days after vowing to “beat India,” Sharif had requested re-engagement with New Delhi in negotiations. However, India has maintained that before starting negotiations, Pakistan must guarantee terror’s elimination from its territory. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has reminded that “Talks and terror cannot go hand-in-hand.”
