Sheikh Hasina faces murder charges amid quota protests

An attempt to murder case has been lodged against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh due to the death of college student Tanvir Siddiqui in quota reform protests. The case was registered in Chandgaon and sought to accuse Hasina of treason, former Education Minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhury Nowfel, and 32 other participants, including the leaders of the Awami League. A further forty to fifty other unidentified luminaries are also designated.

This is the seventh charge against Hasina since her resignation due to mass protests on August 5. Tanvir was a student of Government Ashekane Awlia Degree College, Khanapur, whose life was snapped on August 18 during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement demonstration in which two protesters were killed.

In another matter, Alhaj Hasina and 99 party leaders were accused of killing a protester named Selim Hossain on August 4. Also, former Member of Parliament Ramesh Chandra Sen was arrested on charges of throwing a bomb at students in earlier agitation.

This violence has occurred in the course of protests, and the deaths have been over 230 since Hasina’s government fell, bringing the death toll of the anti-quota demonstrations to 560. The Bangladesh International Crimes Tribunal has started trying Hasina for genocide and crimes against humanity to do with these incidents.
