South Korea’s Ministry of Justice said on Monday that President Yoon Suk Yeol has been put under a travel ban as police investigate allegations of insurrection in connection with his recent declaration of martial law.
At a parliamentary hearing, one legislator asked if Yoon had been barred from leaving the country. Bae Sang-up, an immigration services commissioner at the Ministry of Justice, replied, “Yes, that’s right.”
This development follows from the furor over the highly controversial martial law declaration by Yoon that has led to sharp criticism and questions about his leadership. Now, with this case under investigation, even greater scrutiny of the president and what the implications are for South Korean politics comes into sharp view.
