Sri Lanka’s embattled government has come under fire again from opposition leaders over the contentious appointment of a new top cop.
In a fiery social media post, opposition leader Sajith Premadasa slammed parliamentary speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana for allegedly flouting the constitution.
Premadasa raged that this was the second time key laws were being ‘brazenly violated’ regarding appointing controversial figure Deshabandu Tennakoon as Inspector General of Police.
The outspoken opposition chief pulled no punches in targeting the speaker, saying, “Shame on you!” for clearing the way for Tennakoon’s installation to the critical policing role.
With the island nation mired in its worst economic crisis, the tense political standoff threatens to escalate further in the coming days.
All eyes will be on how the embattled administration responds to the opposition’s emotional accusations of subverting due legal process during these turbulent times.
