A Sudanese military plane has crashed in a residential suburb of the outskirts of Khartoum, killing several officers and civilians.
The crash occurred late Tuesday when the plane was lifting off from Wadi Seidna military airport in northern Omdurman, a suburb of greater Khartoum. More than 20 people were reported dead, according to military sources as quoted by Reuters.
Initial estimates suggest that the crash was caused by technical issues. Among the victims was Major-General Bahr Ahmed, a top commander in Khartoum. In a Tuesday report, the military acknowledged deaths among civilians and personnel but provided no information. “The injured have been transferred to the hospital, and firefighting teams were able to put out the fire at the site of the crash,” the report stated.
Residents of Northern Omdurman claimed to have heard a massive explosion resulting from the crash, damaging some houses and others having power outages in nearby neighborhoods.
The Karari Resistance Committee, which is an umbrella organization for a network that coordinates humanitarian relief across Sudan, reported that 10 bodies and numerous injured were brought to al-Nao Hospital in Omdurman, according to an AFP report.
The Sudanese war, which claimed tens of thousands of lives, erupted after a fight between military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Mohamed Hamadan Daglo, leader of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), on the direction of the future structure of the government. The army is currently making a solid push in central Sudan and Khartoum as part of its multi-front attack against the RSF.
