Super typhoon destroys bridge in Vietnam, cars fall into river

A bridge spans across the Red River has given way in northern Vietnam following a super typhoon Yagi, which claimed the lives of 10 cars and two scooters, according to Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc on Monday.

Three people were recovered alive, and thirteen are still reported missing after the Phong Chau bridge in Phu Tho province gave in, according to Mr. Ho. No information could be found regarding deaths.

Currently, the longest is only 375 meters (1230 feet) of it, which is still operative as the military has been ordered to construct a pontoon bridge as soon as possible.

Yagi is now the strongest storm in Asia this year, and at least 60 people have died since it hit Vietnam on Saturday with gusts reaching up to 203 km per hour or 126 mph.

Since then, the storm has been devastating the northern region of Vietnam.

At least 44 people died in the country from landslides and flash floods, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said on Monday, including a 68-year-old woman, a one-year-old boy, and a newborn baby.

Some 1 and more than 240 have been injured. Still, more than 5 million are without power.

It also caused damage to the roofs of buildings and felled trees.

Although it has however reduced into a tropical depression, people have been advised to expect more floods and landslides as the storm progresses westwards.

Earlier on Monday, in the Yen Bai province, flood waters stood one meter (3 feet) deep and affected 2400 families, forcing them to evacuate to other places, reported the AFP news agency.

Yagi also destroyed and abducted in the sea tens of fishing boats. Sunday is a record of necessary search and rescue operations; 27 people were found in the water after the fate of a dozen fishermen remained unknown.
