Supreme Court ruling favors PTI in reserved seat allocation

PTI has recently emerged victoriously in the Pakistan Supreme Court, which allowed the party to nominate representatives in the reserved seats, reversing the verdict of ECP.

Speaking to Dawn, Justice Qazi Faez Isa said that the 13-member bench entertained the election petition by the PML-N and issued the verdict that upheld the conclusion made by the lower court that the withdrawal of an election symbol cannot disqualify a political party from participating in elections.

It was filed by the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), which lodged a complaint with the ECP against the March 4 verdict by the commission that turned down the PTI-backed SIC’s quota of reserved seat claims.

The ECP relied on Article 51(6), which stated that reserved seats should be given to the political parties proportional to their percentage in the general elections. Subsequently, in the case of the reserved seat, the Supreme Court of Pakistan has today delivered the news of victory after defeating the PTI in the polls held on February 8.

In response to the verdict, the PTI has called for dismissing Chief Election Commissioner Sikander Sultan Raja, who is accused of ‘violating the Constitution of Pakistan.’ Legal disputes regarding the reserved seats have been an issue of conflict. The PML-N argues that the SIC cannot claim the seats as it has not competed in the February 8 elections and also did not submit the list of candidates as per the law.
