Surprise announcement: Biden won’t seek reelection, endorses Harris

It has been quite shocking but true that President Joe Biden last week declared that he will not be vying for the presidency come 2024. However, the president has preferred to nominate VP Kamala Harris as the Democratic party candidate afresh, thus creating a record nomination.

The news emerged after the critics of Biden within the Democratic party began to express doubts about his administration’s ability to manage the nation positively, especially in the wake of emerging economic failures like inflation and looming economic recession.

Biden, who will be 82 years old in the year 2024, a candidate for the presidency, has been subjected to criticism by the Republicans who have accused him of dementia or anything to that effect, portraying him as an unfit character to occupy the presidency position.

The choice of endorsing the vice president of color, Harris, the first woman who would become a candidate for the presidency of the USA as a representative of a major party, has received rather diverse opinions.

Despite the African American woman Kamala Harris as a potential candidate, there are Democratic voices who are excited about Harris’s candidacy and proposals that some Democrats have for increasing voter turnout; Harris has struggled with electrifying Democrats and Independents.

The move has been made at a sensitive time for the DEM party, especially given the emergence of COVID-19, the Ukraine confrontation, and maneuvers around women’s reproductive rights after the decision made by the Supreme Court on the termination of the Roe v. Wade trial.

However, several scenarios of his political career remain unknown. Biden committed to fulfilling the remaining term until January 2025. The president has claimed that the need to facilitate a smooth change of guard and an orderly political situation in the country are some of the reasons that led him to make this decision.

However, the Republican party has waded into the news, with most party bigwigs reaffirming their belief in their capacity to exploit the perceived Achilles’ heel of the Biden administration and possibly the Harris candidacy ticket.

With the upcoming election cycle in 2024, the political sphere is expected to be engaged in the aftermath of Biden’s decision and what it means for the future of the Democratic Party and the country at large.
