Swede sentenced for drunk driving with a drone

A Swede was caught driving a drone while being drunk. The man was sentenced – the first case of such kind in Sweden.

In Sweden, a 55-year-old man was convicted by a district court for drunk driving a drone. His blood alcohol content was 0.69 per mile at the time of the offence. The man had to pay a fine. This is the first criminal conviction for flying a drone while drunk in Sweden.

The man also planned to take aerial photographs with his drone in July 2024 at a classic car event in Rättvik, in the Swedish region of Dalarna. However, as the area was a no-fly zone, flying over the event site was not allowed.

The police deployed their drone to monitor the no-fly zone and noticed the flying object as well. They searched for the drone’s pilot and discovered that he was drunk. A sample proved a blood alcohol content of 0.69 per mille. Later, he said he did not fly the drone. According to him, his friend flew it, but the police were unable to find him.

Fine The Swedish district court established that he had flown the drone while drunk. In so doing, it may have placed other people’s lives at risk. He was convicted by the court to pay a fine of 32,000 Swedish kronor. It was ordered payable in 80 daily rates at 400 Swedish kronor per day. The total sum converted to approximately 2792 euros.

The court based its decision on the same range of penalties applicable to drunk driving. In Sweden, a blood alcohol level over 0.2 per mile in a vehicle is a criminal offence. A blood alcohol level of 1.0 per mile or higher is a crime against a person.
