
Talibana Minister Khalil Haqqani was killed in Afghanistan’s capital city, Kabul, following an explosion, sources reported WION on Wednesday, 11 Dec.
He had been the acting minister of refugees and repatriation. Sources said that the explosion that was a suicide attack occurred in the Ministry of Refugees itself.
The attacker entered the premises as a refugee. Sources told WION that a suicide bomber came to the ministry, looking for his documents as a refugee, when people were seeking help. Post-lunch, Khalil visited the ministry premises, as the attacker detonated the bomb at the time Khalil passed through the corridor.
There is no report on how many more people died in that blast. The blast’s possible suspects are Islamic State-Khorasan Province (ISKP).
Khalil was a member of the powerful Haqqani network. Khalil was a member of the powerful Haqqani network. He was the brother of Haqqani network founder Jamaluddin Haqqani and the uncle of Taliban Interior Minister Siraj Haqqani.
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) defines the Haqqani network as a Taliban-affiliated group that operates from the North Waziristan Agency in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan.
In 2011, in its report, the UNSC stated that Haqqani conducted fund-raising on behalf of the Taliban. And the Haqqani network mostly travels outside the country to visit financial sponsors.
Further, the UNSC pointed out that Haqqani had acted on behalf of Al-Qaeda and had also been traced to some of Al-Qaeda’s military operations.
