In a rather twist of events, Iran and Israel stare at the barrel of the gun following the murder of a hawk NSA of Hamas in Tehran. Their political chief, Ismail Haniyeh, was gruesomely killed, and this has brought about a lot of concern in Iran, and the government has vowed to start an attack on terrorists.
Virtually all daily newspapers for the past few days claimed that in response to Haniyeh’s death, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has instructed forces to launch a direct attack on Israel. This was decided at an extraordinary sitting of the SCN on Wednesday in the wake of the news about Haniyeh’s liquidation.
The event has caused worry in the international community because the United Nations Security Council met to deliberate on the upsurge in tensions in the Middle East. Iran compared the recent attacks with the Shining Sun Operation of 1981. It urged the council to hold Israel responsible for this crime, while the latter demanded the same and asked the council to condemn Iran for the recent strikes.
Iran’s Am [. ] Saeed Iravani also called for immediate action of the SC to demand accountability from Israel for what he described as an act of aggression and demanded sanctions and other measures that would deter further aggression and demonstrate that the international community will not allow such malevolent activities by the Israeli regime in the Middle East.
On the other side, Israeli Deputy Ambassador Jonathan Miller explained in his response that the country would retaliate and attack those who are against it with tremendous force. He also asked the Security Council to pursue Iran for supporting and providing the necessary equipment and resources to not only Hamas but also Hezbollah.
The tensions are high exactly at the moment when the region needs to come to terms with the consequences of Haniyeh’s assassination. Every party formed and involved is advised to calm down and take steps towards defusing the conflict before it grows out of proportion and creates a much larger scenario.
