Harrowing Ordeal: Thai Woman Suffers for 18 Years after Surgical Needle Left in Vagina during Childbirth.
In a heart-wrenching tale of medical negligence and perseverance, a woman in Thailand has endured nearly two decades of excruciating pain and suffering after a surgical needle was accidentally left in her vagina during childbirth.
The 36-year-old woman, hailing from Narathiwat province, recounted the fateful incident that occurred 18 years ago when a nurse accidentally dropped the needle into her vagina while stitching her up after delivery.
Despite attempts by a doctor to locate and remove the errant needle, the procedure was ultimately abandoned due to concerns over further blood loss.
According to the foundation, the woman’s ordeal has been a protracted one, with the pain and complications lasting for nearly two decades and significantly impacting her quality of life. It was only last year that an X-ray finally confirmed the presence of the needle, still lodged in her vagina.
Medical personnel at a local hospital subsequently referred the woman for surgery in the Songkhla province to remove the needle. However, the procedure has faced repeated delays, as the needle’s shifting position has complicated the surgical plan.
Recognizing the woman’s dire situation, the Pavena Foundation sprang into action. The organization’s head, Pawina Hongsakul, reached out to a public hospital and arranged an appointment to ensure the woman received the necessary treatment.
Additionally, Hongsakul coordinated with the Department of Social Development and Human Security in the province to provide transportation support, aiming to alleviate the financial strain caused by the woman’s frequent hospital visits.
This harrowing tale serves as a stark reminder of the importance of medical diligence and the profound impact that even a single oversight can have on a patient’s life.
