During the burial ceremony held in Didim, Turkey, thousands paid their last respect to a Turkish-American political activist, Aysenur Ezgi, who was killed by the Israeli troops in the West Bank. Protests are being held across the world, and Palestinians have called for an international intervention after a 26-year-old was shot in the head while joining an anti-settlement protest on September 6th.
A large number of relatives, friends, and supporters came to say the last farewells on Saturday; the corpse was covered with the Turkish flag. Her ashes were brought to Didim after the ceremony of martyrs who were buried at Istanbul airport. This made Eygi’s family wish for her to be buried in her hometown town, where her grandfather resides.
Eygis’s mother, Rabia Birden, demanded justice by saying that all she wants from this state is justice for her daughter, While Turkey’s Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmus promised those behind her death will be held accountable in international tribunals.
The Turkish government is investigating the issue and has called for a United Nations probe into the matter. Eygi was also part of the International Solidarity Movement, whose main concern was combating the Israeli occupation. Eyewitnesses have accused her of being deliberately shot, a charge that is contrary to the Israeli military account that she was shot accidentally during a protest.
