Tragic death after immigration raids on California cannabis farms

Officials said they detained around 200 immigrants and rescued 10 endangered children in the course of the raids. A migrant worker has succumbed to injuries he sustained during raids on two California marijuana farms, while United States officials confirmed they detained 200 workers following an armed standoff with protesters.

The United Farm Workers pressure group confirmed Jaime Alanis, who was hurt after a 30-foot (nine-metre) fall during one of the raids, had died in a post on X on Friday. We regrettably can confirm that a farm worker has passed away due to injuries they obtained because of yesterday’s immigration enforcement activity,” it stated.

Federal immigration officials confirmed on Friday that they have arrested approximately 200 immigrants believed to be in the US illegally in Thursday raids at two marijuana farms in Carpinteria and Camarillo, Southern California.

The Department of Homeland Security stated in an announcement that they also identified at least 10 immigrant children during the raids who were saved from “potential exploitation, forced labour, and human trafficking”.

The statement revealed that four US citizens had been apprehended for their involvement in violent clashes between agents and protesters. The authorities also provide a reward of $50,000 for information that will lead to the arrest of another individual who is suspected of firing a gun at the federal agents.

Throughout the operation, over 500 rioters tried to interfere with operations. Four US citizens are criminally charged with assaulting or resisting officers. The rioters smashed cars, and one violent provocateur shot a weapon at law enforcement officers,” the statement added.

One of the raids had immigration agents in military-style helmets and uniforms burst into Glass House Farms – a legal cannabis producer which also cultivates tomatoes and cucumbers – in Camarillo on Thursday.

Agents confronted the protesters outside the farm, as large groups of people arrived in protest to seek details about their loved ones and to protest against the raids. Andrew Dowd, a spokesperson for the Ventura County Fire Department, said at least 12 people were injured as a result of the raid and protest.
