The bus driver said the victim had signs of severe electric shock as burn marks were seen on the fingers of his left hand.
The 18-year-old man lost his life due to electrocution while charging his mobile phone on a bus in Malaysia. The incident happened on 1 November at Penang Sentral bus terminal in Butterworth, shortly after he boarded an express bus headed to Kuala Lumpur. According to the Independent, the teenager plugged his phone into a bus socket with the hope of charging it.
Shortly, about ten minutes later, other passengers heard him scream, with foam coming out of his mouth. Having seen the scary scene, other passengers called emergency services. Emergency responders were then called onto the scene at about 6:20 pm local time. Unfortunately, the 18-year-old victim was pronounced dead by paramedics shortly after arrival.
An autopsy later confirmed that electrocution was the official cause of death. According to the bus driver, he said that the victim seemed to suffer from a severe electric shock and burn marks were visible on the fingers of his left hand. Also, the charging cable had melted, and there was an overheating of the phone, which shows the critical failure of any electrical system.
Preliminary investigations showed that the victim had burn marks on his left fingers, believed to have been caused by an electric shock while he was charging his handphone.
The cause of this incident will be investigated by the special task force to ensure that it does not happen again and the safety of the passengers will be guaranteed, Assistant Commissioner of Police Mr Abdul Rahman said in a statement, according to The Straits Times.
Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the department would establish a special task force to investigate the incident.
