Truck driver in deadly Humboldt Broncos crash ordered deported to India

In a recently sad event, the Indian-origin truck driver who was involved in a tragic bus accident in Canada, which resulted in the death of 16 members of a junior hockey team and seriously injured 13 others in 2018, was deported to India.

A 29-year-old Indian-origin truck driver named Jaskirat Singh Sidhu from Calgary was speeding and reportedly ran through a stop sign before colliding with the hockey bus on a rural road junction near Tisdale in Saskatchewan Province.

In defense of his client, Sidhu’s lawyer, Michael Greene, stated that it was unequivocal for him to be deported. All that was needed was for the Canadian government to prove that his client was not a Canadian and was aware that he committed a serious offense. Sidhu is an Indian but has a permanent residency status in Canada.

”It’s very obvious,” Greene said, as the Canadian Press news agency reported. “There is nothing for debate, so those are as obvious as the daylight. These hearings are characteristic of being done posthaste.”

Sidhu was earlier arrested for dangerous driving on a bus in 2018 and was sentenced to 8 years imprisonment but has been paroled. Nevertheless, the deportation process may take several months or even several years, as further stated by his lawyer.

The decision for Sidhu’s deportation has attracted different reactions, with some of the families that lost their loved ones in the crash expressing delight for Sidhu’s deportation.

On the same note, Sidhu’s lawyer suggested that the permanent residents’ rights to have consideration for their situation were severely restricted, and they will now have to consider applying as refugees in an attempt to stop their deportation.

Such sentiments were elicited after the horrendous Humboldt Broncos bus accident that left the nation in shock and is now followed by another contentious move in deporting the driver of the tragedy. While reviewing this case, it becomes apparent that many legal and humanitarian factors are in play.
