Canada offers cooperation as Modi set to take oath as PM for third time.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has congratulated Narendra Modi on his electoral victory, saying his country stands ready to work with India upholding principles of human rights and rule of law. In a tweet, Trudeau credited PM Modi and the BJP-led NDA’s success in the recent Lok Sabha polls while reiterating Canada’s cooperation with New Delhi.
His message comes after a parliamentary panel red-flagged India as the second biggest foreign interference threat to Ottawa’s democracy after China.
The report citing India’s growing foreign influence efforts beyond countering pro-Khalistani elements was tabled in the Canadian parliament this week.
Battling diplomatic tensions with India over Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s murder last year, Trudeau has been vocal against New Delhi.
However, the PM congratulated Modi despite their divergent views on certain issues. BJP secured an absolute majority by winning 240 seats, with NDA’s total reaching 293 in the 543-member lower house.
Modi is set to take oath for a third consecutive term as Prime Minister on June 8, bolstered by his coalition’s thumping victory.
Since last year, India and Canada have witnessed interceptions due to Ottawa accusing Indian agents of the killing of pro-Khalistani figure Najjar.
