Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has reportedly lost support among his core Liberal allies since Deputy PM Chrystia Freeland’s shocking exit last week.
According to several Canadian media outlets, including the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the Toronto Star, at least 51 MPs from Ontario province, the country’s most populous province, recently met virtually and agreed to show Trudeau the exit door. The Liberal party has 75 members in the Ontario chapter, and dwindling support in the province translates to serious political trouble for the prime minister.
Discontent over Trudeau’s leadership had been building up over the months, but it looks like Freeland’s rude exit is snowballing into the final straw for the Canadian leader. Within a week, at least 21 Liberal MPs have publicly urged Trudeau to step down.
According to reports by the Toronto Star, none of the members of the Ontario parliament will support the re-election bid in the next elections. For instance, as reported by Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Anthony Housefather, Quebec Liberal MP, expressed that the “vast majority” of fellow MPs he is consulting “should think that Justin Trudeau must quit, whether they’ve made this public or not”.
Freeland has reportedly quit the cabinet in disagreement over Canada’s response to the tariff threat by Donald Trump, US president-elect. She had offered her resignation on December 16 and warned of the dangers of Trump’s “America-first” economic nationalism.
